There’s no recession in the digital data storage business. Though specific estimates vary, there’s a consensus that the rate of growth is about 50% each year. #BACKBLAZE HARD DRIVE STATS ARCHIVE#What’s state-of-the-art in storage today may not be a year from now.Īt the same time, everyone’s need to archive a vast amount of data is exploding. The creation of a very long-term, highly reliable archival storage medium is the subject of a vast amount of research these days it’s an ever changing technology. #BACKBLAZE HARD DRIVE STATS PC#For most normal PC and Mac personal computer users, the cost dictates the second option.Īnother factor is there is no such thing today as permanent storage technology for the masses. #BACKBLAZE HARD DRIVE STATS PROFESSIONAL#So what’s a computer user to do? Essentially there are two choices today for serious archiving: either spend big money to record your data on a professional magneto-optical or other archival media for long term backup or use a combination of hard drives, SSD and cloud backup. So somewhere between 6-10 years, your data is going to disappear because the magnetic field is no longer strong enough to retain the data. No magnetic drive company claims its products can store data reliably for more than 10 years. The rule of thumb is all magnetic media, like that used in hard drives, has a half-life of about five years. Though the Backblaze data can help us small-scale users determine which models to buy, there is still no guarantee the drive won’t fail. Backblaze has 250 Dell DellBoss VD SSD drives. Its AFR was even more impressive at 0.36%. The company also has 562 Seagate ZA250CM10002 drives. There are only four of them in use and one of them failed.īackblaze uses 1,090 of the Seagate ZA250CM10003 drives and it had a 1.04% AFR in 2021. The situation is more extreme with the Seagate drive in question. It supports all popular disk formats, has a fast operation, and a clever design that allows you to use the drive at your office and on-the-go with comfort. While there’s a high AFR, there’s a low sample size and a wide confidence interval. Well, the Dell DW316 can rightly be called a smart external CD/DVD drive. Backblaze uses only 20 Crucial drives, and they were all installed in December. We’ll be watching the Backblaze blog for upcoming stats and observations as the hard drives continue to be tested over the coming months. This model was also the oldest, in average age, of all the drives listed. Low annualized failure rate for Seagate 6TB drive (more drive days)įor drive models with over 250,000 drive days over the course of 2020, the Seagate 6TB drive (model: ST6000DX000) led the way with a 0.23% annualized failure rate (AFR). Backblaze tested 6,0002 pieces of that WDC model and found that the AFR for this drive model was just 0.16%. Only one Western Digital drive made it onto the report, the 14TB model WUH721414ALE6L4, however it’s important to say that HGST is a Western Digital brand, so they are under the same corporate umbrella – and HGST drives have consistently been outperforming Seagate drives over many years (and this year is no exception). Toshiba’s drives have been impressive, with a 14TB drive (model: MG07ACA14TA) and 16TB drive (model: MG08ACA16TEY) each delivering zeros for annualized failure rates (AFR) – though these drives had only been installed for two months by the time Backblaze’s 2020 stats were published. Most reliable hard drives from Toshiba, HGST, Western Digital The good news is, the annualized failure rate has dropped by 50% since 2019, where it stood at 1.89% compared to 2020’s 0.93%. keyboard_arrow_rightCameras of the Year.keyboard_arrow_rightGear Guides by Budget.keyboard_arrow_rightGear Guides by Type. ![]()
